Native Animals
One of the unique things about this zoo is that it only houses animals that are native to Minnesota. The caretakers of the zoo are dedicated to caring for animals that would normally live in the Minnesota climate but have been injured or are otherwise unable to return to nature. The zoo is named for Dr. Paul Zollman, DVM, who was dedicated to caring for animals in a compassionate manner, which is now the zoo's philosophy as well.
Animals that you might see at the zoo include otters, coyotes, cougars, bobcats, foxes, porcupines, and raptors, among others. Since there are only animals at the zoo that are native to the area, children can get a great education on local environmental issues as well as on why these animals thrive in the region.
Gordon Yeager Memorial Area
Across from the zoo that houses the wild animals that call Minnesota home is the Gordon Yeager Memorial Area. This is where you'll see the hoofed animals that are part of Minnesota's agricultural history. These animals include bison, elk, and white-tail deer and they roam around a restored pioneer home on the prairie. You can also see an antique farm equipment display in this area, which will provide you a glimpse of farming in the past.
Oxbow Park
The zoo is actually located within Oxbow Park, which is 642 acres of open space where visitors can picnic, play, hike, and even camp. There are nearly 30 campsites available, with access to modern showers and restrooms. Picnic shelters are located throughout the park and include electrical outlets and a fire ring. There is no fee to use the shelters, and they are available on a first-come, first-served basis.
There are numerous hiking trails in the park, all of which are well-marked and maintained. The Oxbow Nature Center located in the park can provide hikers with trail maps so that the park can be fully enjoyed. Located near the campsites is a man-made playground, but there is also a natural playground nearby as well. Children love to climb around the rocks and play among the trees.
Oxbow Nature Center
The Oxbow Nature Center is situated in Oxbow Park and is near the zoo. It provides educational and recreational activities in the park and zoo all year round. You might find school field trips visiting the Nature Center, but it's open to anyone who is interested in learning more about Minnesota's wildlife and environment. There is also a snake exhibit at the Nature Center that showcases snakes native to the area.
The zoo, memorial area, park, and Nature Center are all free to visit, which makes this one of the cheapest activities you will find.
