It's a safe bet that most Ford car and truck buyers have heard some reference to the "limited warranty" offered on new cars. It's also a safe bet that very few buyers actually know what that warranty does and does not cover. Basically, a warranty offers protection to the buyer from defects in manufacturing. Knowing and understanding what the new car warranty from your Ford dealership covers can save you a lot of time, hassle, and money down the road.

What Is the Car Warranty From a Ford Dealership?

The typical warranty contains some important numbers, specifically 3/36,000. This means that the warranty covers your new car for the first 3 years or 36,000 miles, whichever occurs first. So if you buy a car and put 40,000 miles on it in the first year, your warranty runs out. But what specific parts does the warranty cover? A garden-variety warranty is usually referred to as a "bumper-to-bumper" warranty, which means that virtually every part of the vehicle is protected.

Are All Parts of the Car Covered for the Same Period/Mileage?

There are actually several exceptions to the 3-year/36,000-mile standard warranty.

Diesel engines, powertrain, and safety restraint systems are covered for up to 5 years or 60,000 miles
Perforation-type corrosion (limited scope) is covered for up to 5 years or unlimited miles
SuperDuty trucks with the optional diesel engine are covered for up to 5 years or 100,000 miles
Emissions systems are covered for up to 8 years or 80,000 miles
Ford's roadside assistance coverage period is also 5 years or 60,000 miles

What Do the Different Warranties Cover?

The 5/60,000 powertrain warranty covers the engine, transmission, and all-wheel drive or four-wheel drive. Corrosion protection is limited to environmental causes (12/12,000), but it does not include things like hail or tree damage. The seatbelt and airbag system warranty is federally mandated. Parts such as the catalytic converter and other emission modules and parts are covered for 8 years/80,000 miles. Ford also offers some tire warranty in the form of a percentage of replacement cost up to 36,000 miles.

What's Not Included?

Normal maintenance items such as wiper blades, oil and filters, brake pads, and air filters are not included. Damage done to the paint via chemicals is likewise not covered. Modifying the engine or body in any way can void your warranty, so it's a good idea to check with your dealer beforehand. Damage caused by driving into deep water is not covered. Finally, using your vehicle for commercial use such as a ride-sharing service is not covered by your warranty.
