Ford’s long-running Explorer is well suited for larger families with its three-row seating and generous cargo space. It offers versatile configurations when it comes to its drivetrain and equipment. For the 2022 model year, the mid-sized SUV sports all the great capability and technology that you’d expect from Ford, but there’s now a new performance-oriented ST-Line model that brings extra excitement. Here’s a quick look at the new 2022 Ford Explorer!

Basics About the 2022 Ford Explorer

Powertrain Options

The base Explorer, XLT, Timberline, ST-Line, and Limited models come standard with the turbocharged 2.3L EcoBoost inline-four engine that produces 300 horsepower and 310 lb-ft of torque. Fans of hybrid engines can choose to go with the 318 horsepower and 322 lb-ft of torque of the 3.3L engine, which also increases fuel economy to an EPA-rated 29 MPG highway for rear-wheel-drive models.
The twin-turbocharged 3.0L V6 produces the most grunt of the bunch with 400 horsepower and 415 lb-ft of torque. Most models can tow up to 5,000 pounds while the 3.0L V6 is capable of hauling up to 5,600 pounds. A 10-speed automatic transmission delivers the power for all models. Available Intelligent 4WD provides increased traction when driving on slippery roads or rugged trails.

New ST-Line Model

The sporty Explorer ST-Line has been introduced as a lighter, rear-wheel drive alternative to the ST model. This model sits on stylish 20-inch machined aluminum wheels with black-painted pockets. Its exterior also sports unique black accenting, ST-Line badging, and a dual-tipped exhaust for a racier look. The ST-Line’s interior features ActiveX upholstery with Miko inserts and red stitching, along with a performance steering wheel.

Interior Cabin

Inside the Explorer is a spacious, comfortable, and attractive passenger compartment. There’s room for seven occupants and the second-row seat can be moved aside with a simple push of a button to grant easy access to the third-row seats. The rear seating can be folded down if you need to use the Explorer as a cargo hauler with up to 87.8 cubic feet of space available.
Heated and ventilated leather seats are available to keep passengers cozy throughout the year. You can also select a twin-panel moonroof that opens up the Explorer’s interior even more and provides an excellent view of the sky above.

Technology and Connectivity

Ford’s 8-inch infotainment touchscreen comes with most models, but a larger 10.1-inch vertical display can also be selected. Connectivity options are excellent, including Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and FordPass Connect 4G LTE Wi-Fi hotspot. There are multiple USB ports in the front and rear and the available navigation system can be controlled with voice commands through Ford’s innovative SYNC technology.

As for driver assists, every Explorer comes with an array of equipment to help keep your family safe. It comes standard with forward-collision detection with automatic emergency braking, blind-spot, and rear cross-traffic monitoring, and lane-keeping assistance.

Whether you’re hauling the kids to school or taking the family on a weekend trip to enjoy the great outdoors, the Explorer is the perfect mid-size SUV for the job.
